Gerund


The gerund has exactly the same form as the present participle; smoking, swimming, waiting. It can be used in 4 ways;

1.In noun compounds
For example:
smoking area
swimming pool
waiting room
drawing book

2.As object of a sentence
For example;
I like swimming
He stopped smoking
The little girl enjoys drawing
He has finished doing his work.

3.As subject of a sentence
For example;
Swimming is a good for your health.
Swimming in the sea will be dangerous.
Being a good tennis player needs a lot of practice.

4.After preposition
For example;
After swimming, I felt cold.
She is good at singing
He is thinking of continuing his study in America
He earns money by writing books.
